Beat the SAT/ACT Essay Challenge!

SAT/ACT Essay Preparation Workshop – Summer 2007

Workshop Objective: This workshop is designed to give students who want to maximize their scores on the essay portion of the SAT and ACT examinations an opportunity – in a creative and supportive atmosphere – to sharpen their essay writing skills. This workshop – in a slightly different format – has been offered three times previously.

Modus Operandi:

• Discussion of the specific writing challenges presented by the SAT and ACT essay prompts
• Discussion of writing techniques that produce superior SAT/ACT essays
• Reading and discussion of examples of excellent essay writing
• One-on-one work with John Overbeck, an experienced writer, teacher and writing mentor
• Group discussions and mentored peer critiques
• Time to think, to write, to discuss

The Details:

• The workshop is designed for students interested in preparing for the SAT and ACT examinations
• Class time (“face time”) and online
• 25 hours of instructional time
• Flexible schedule to accommodate vacations and busy summer days (Students create their own schedules)
• Schedule options:
  • Classes 2-4 p.m. Monday and Friday; 10 a.m. to Noon on Wednesday
  • Online by appointment

Dates: June 25-August 17

Cost: $250.00 ($10.00 per hour). $50.00 off if paid on or before first day of workshop.

Portfolio: Each student will leave the workshop with a certificate of completion, an SAT/ACT essay preparation writing portfolio, and a John Scott Academy “Mentoring Pass” that will entitle the student – without charge – to SAT/ACT essay mentoring, coaching and assistance throughout the 2007-2008 school year.

Workshop Size: Because of the one-on-one nature of the workshop, participation is limited to 12 students.
